MIRIAM BACKHOUSE (article first published : 2006-12-4)

At the launch of the Durban Arts Association in 1982, an English folk singer with long brunette hair entertained everyone with her songs. Since then, Mim and John Erasmus have become household names, entertaining audiences from one year old to 100!

Since returning from an eight month tour in the UK returning to her roots, appearing at numerous folk festivals and receiving much accolade for her talents, Mim has now re-established herself as professional folk singer Miriam Backhouse.

Her songs like The beautiful pass at Van Reenen and Over Africa have joined South Africa’s rich music heritage. Her “protest” songs about the border war have been recognised as some of the best, ranking alongside those penned in other troubled times in Ireland etc.

She has albums in the pipeline and the re–release of the classic Gypsy without a Road ahead of her and she has further UK tours lined up for 2007 and 2008.
