ZOCO NDIMANDE (article first published : 2006-11-19)

Slingshot Productions presents “A Nite Out” Session with Mozambican guitarist Zoco Ndimande on November 23.

The Nite Out Sessions at Vestige have acquired a reputation for assembling artists from the different corners of the world. Whether it’s an Australian artist or a Brazilian band touring Southern Africa, rest assured that a guest feature on the Sessions is bound to happen.

Zoco Ndimande is one of the top guitarists from Mozambique and his music is described as “nothing less than incredible”. He can run a gamut of styles, from marrabenta (a Latin inspired urban style from Mozambique) and rock to blues to jazz. He was voted the top guitarist in the Womad Festival 2002 which is run by Peter Gabriel. He has toured Europe a number of times where he played in major festivals as well as in clubs with his band Mabulu. He has also toured Australia, expanding his skills and sharing knowledge with a number of Australian musicians.

When in Durban in 2005, he performed with Afro Blue on the Blues Festival as part of Celebrate Durban. He also made appearances at the Playhouse Women’s Festival, Sibaya, Nedbank Music at the Lake and numerous corporate events as well as some smaller gigs. He also performed with Busi Mhlongo at ABSA Stadium and the Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown.

Zoco will also be accompanied by long-time South African affiliate Susan Barry from local Afro-Fusion band, Afro Blue. Susan Barry is a full-time lecturer in the jazz department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Susan is a composer/pianist whose compositions have been in demand from top names in the South African music industry such as Themba Mkhize. She has done two major European tours with Busi Mhlongo, recording her first album with Busi in Holland which received critical acclaim all over Europe. She still works with Busi and is the co-leader of Afro Blue with bassist, Philani Ngidi.

Zoco Ndimande’s Nite Out Session will commence at 20h00 on November 23. More information from Mithesh of Vestige Bistro & Bar, corner St. Thomas and Musgrave Roads, on 031 201 7767.
