NEWMAN, BUTTERY AND VAN DER SPUY (article first published : 2006-11-15)

Each a legend in his own right, Steve Newman, Guy Buttery & Nibs van der Spuy are currently on a one week tour, performing in some of KwaZulu-Natal's much loved venues. With a large repertoire from each musician, one can only expect magical acoustic dreams performed in solo, duo and trio form featuring guitars, sitar and mandolin.

Since the release of his first album in 1979, to his concerts around the globe with his highly acclaimed trio, Tananas, as well as his much loved, long-standing duo show with Tony Cox, Steve Newman is a household name in South Africa. Whenever the word guitar is mentioned, the name Steve Newman will always turn-up. With the release of his latest solo album, South Africa has seen him touring consistently at nearly every major festival and music venue.

With Steve Newman as one of his major influences, Guy Buttery has gone from strength to strength and has evolved into one of South Africa’s finest musicians. From his exquisite solo performances, to his varied and much loved collaborative work with the likes of Nibs van der Spuy, The Gareth Gale Collective and Farryl Purkiss, as well as teaming with Madala Kunene for a recent SABC production and recording with Vusi Mahlasela. Audiences around the country have marvelled at his talent on the guitar as well as his unique performances on sitar and mandolin. He has also released two highly acclaimed solo albums, both of which were nominated at the South African Music Awards.

Nibs van der Spuy has been a hugely prolific creative force and an inspirational figure across the globe for his various collaborations and groups since the late 80's. Apart from his many varied musical outings, Nibs has also released three very successful solo albums, just recently producing his new international release of his latest solo album Beautiful Feet and, fresh from an Australian tour with Farryl Purkiss this month, Nibs continues to delight and amaze audiences world-wide.

These four shows promise to bring together the best of each artist capturing the spirit of an exciting New South Africa, with its vast melting pot of influences and colour. Dates, venues and contact numbers follow:
