DEATH OF JABU KHANYILE (article first published : 2006-11-12)

Well-known Afro award-winning fusion exponent, Jabu Khanyile, died in Johannesburg early this morning after a long battle with cancer.

Chris Ntuli of the Durban-based well-known isicathamiya group Durban Black Drifters pays tribute to the man and his music.

“Coming from the Khanyile clan in the Nkandla region, I have lost a king and a chief,” he says. “Jabu Khanyile is from my home town. I have known him since I was a farm boy and I loved the man and his music. He was exposed at an early age to township life – quite rare for us in the rural areas those days. There are no words to describe his contribution to South African music. He created a new style of music which was acceptable to all audiences. We have recorded with him and he produced Durban Black Drifters’ latest album Ivangeli. Nkosiyami, I salute you on behalf of the whole Khanyile clan and the people of Nkandla region as a whole.”

More tributes to follow.
