SLEEPING BEAUTY (article first published : 2006-10-22)

If you loved Winnie-the-Pooh, Snow White and Cinderella, donít miss KickstArtís new production of the classic fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty!

Steven Stead and Greg King present their latest family pantomime, complete with goblins, dragons, an enchanted castle, vanishing fairies and magically growing rose trees.

Over the last two years, KickstArt has been responsible for reviving the tradition of family pantomime in Durban, with the award-winning Snow White and Cinderella at Kwasuka Theatre, and a highly successful production of Winnie-the-Pooh, staged at the Playhouse Opera in July which played to more than 12,500 people!

Sleeping Beauty will have all the elements of these earlier successes: glorious sets and costumes, funny, catchy songs, jokes and giggles a-plenty, and a fantastic local cast of top professionals.

The witty script is by Steven Stead, while the lavish designs are by Greg King. Despite being busy directing My Fair Lady for The Playhouse Company in December, Stead also directs and choreographs Sleeping Beauty, with the help of experienced co-director, Kenlynn Sutherland. Musical direction is by well-known Durban maestro, Evan Roberts.

In the title role is Shelley Maclean with Cobus van Heerden as her handsome prince. Also in the cast are Belinda Henwood, Bryan Hiles, Thomie Holtzhausen, Darren King, Aaron McIlroy, Clare Mortimer and Wendy Watson.

Sleeping Beauty is designed for the whole family. It will run at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from December 8 to31, with low-price previews (R60 throughout) on December 7 at 14h30 and 19h00. Tickets R75 (R60 pensioners and children under 12). Early booking at Computicket is advised!
