HOT BOX (article first published : 2006-10-20)

Ruffinery Records, Durban’s new independent record label, has announced the arrival of Hot Box, the new album from groundbreaking group, Big Idea. Producer and co-owner of the label Nathan "King Babar" Redpath says, "we are going to blow the minds of music lovers across the country, and turn the industry on its head in the process!" A bold statement coming from a small independent in an industry dominated by the financial might of the major record labels.

This is a much anticipated debut release from jazz/hip hop fusion outfit Big Idea which is led by Gareth "2Gs"Gale on drums and front man Quincy "Q" Fynn.

Hot Box has been hailed as "an album crammed with what are soon to be classics … music that you can go crazy and have a great time dancing to … have an equally good time sitting back and filtering through the gritty Durban/urban-coloured slang spat out by the pragmatic Q and featured Mcs' JET (Lee Wynne) and King Babar (Nathan Redpath)”.

New recruit Burton Naidoo is eager to show his versatility with Big Idea after recently winning the national SAMRO prize for jazz piano in Pretoria and Dj LV (Leighshay Van Wyk) who has just returned from a stint in the UK also makes a cameo on the album.

The special edition first print of the album is an enhanced digital cd which also includes a digital presentation of the label as well as 5 bonus trax which give a hint of what is to come from Ruffinery Records. The enhanced package was put together by co-founder of Ruffinery, Rory Jacobs, who also setup the Labels very impressive website (www.ruffinery.co.za).

Ruffinery Records was created last year by engineer- Rory Jacobs, Producer- Nathan Redpath and manager- Quincy Fynn. The trio initially decided to locate the studio in Wentworth to avoid the high cost of space elsewhere, but have since realised the value of being located within the heart of a community. "The inspiration that we get from being amongst the community everyday definitely fuels our passion for making the best music we can possibly make. Because it seems like everybody is watching and waiting to see what we come up with", says an inspired Quincy Fynn. Rory Jacobs continues, "it is very different when you are cooped up in a studio in a building somewhere. Here we can just take a walk to the shop and be inspired because there are always people around."

"We were tired of complaining that we are being overlooked by the major record labels. They are very confined in their outlook and are not interested in risking money on artists who do not make music which fits neatly into one of their preconceived packages," adds Redpath. "We are definitely a unique outfit and HOT BOX is the perfect example of how different what we are doing is from the stuff you hear on radio or see on tv. And the main difference is, we are who you see and not a carefully crafted marketing ploy!"

The guys are definitely on a mission. And if their initial assault on the public's music sensibilities is anything to go by, then they are sure to become household names, if not South Africa's version of hip hop backpacker-turned- music industry executive.

The album is available from Rythmic Beat and online at www.ruffinery.co.za
