LION KING AUDITIONS (article first published : 2006-09-26)

Following the announcement of the South African staging of award-winning Broadway musical, The Lion King, nationwide open auditions have been scheduled.

Actors, singers, and dancers are invited to audition for one of 52 roles in what is to be an all-African cast.

Adult singers (18-35): The casting team is seeking strong, dynamic singers for all roles. Please bring sheet music for a song to show off your voice and range in 16 bars that you will sing with piano accompaniment (such as R & B, gospel). Should you not have sheet music, prepare to perform a standard rock or gospel song to show off your voice.

Adult Dancers (18-35): Strong male and female dancers with a classic and modern dance background are sought. Some male dancers require strong acro skills. You must be warmed-up and ready to dance in flat jazz shoes or bare feet.

Children: Children’s auditions are on October 1 at the Bassline in Newtown, Johannesburg. The casting team is seeking children of ages 9-12 with a maximum height of 1.47m who can sing, dance and act to play the African lion cubs Simba and Nala. No previous performance experience is necessary. Be prepared to be taught the last verse of Just Can’t Wait to be King. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents or guardians must remain at the audition site at all times.

Men, women and children of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to attend.

Disney Theatricals representatives: Aubrey Lynch (associate producer), Egil Kipste (head of International casting) and Duma Ndlovu, Disney’s South African casting director lead the casting team.

Sign in from 09h00 to 11h00 and auditions begin at 10h00 at each centre -- arriving is early advised. Open auditions will be held on September 27 and 28 at the SABC Old Ford Road,
