WE WILL ROCK YOU (article first published : 2006-09-25)

The highly-acclaimed, award-winning musical, We Will Rock You opens at the Playhouse on September 30 for a limited season. This is the first time the production will be staged in Durban and the South African cast and band are looking forward to getting Durban audiences to rock like never before.

We Will Rock You is a new breed of musical - a unique collaboration between Queen, the legends of rock and British writer, Ben Elton. The all South African cast of 28 members includes award-winning singer and songwriter Vicky Sampson (Killer Queen); Helen Burger (Scaramouche), Francois Lliam (Galileo); Neels Clasen (Khashoggi); Murray Todd (Britney); Talia Kodesh (Oz) and Malcolm Terrey (Pop). Also appearing are two well-known Durban performers - Dean Roberts who is part of the ensemble and Rowan Stuart, one of the guitarists.

The musical is not touted as a Queen tribute but a "rock theatre" experience featuring 24 of Queen's greatest hits, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions, Another One Bites The Dust and Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

Since the first show in Johannesburg in May 2006, followed by an eight week season at Artscape, Cape Town, We Will Rock You has enjoyed rave reviews and standing ovations at every performance.

The enormous scale, size and cost of the show makes We Will Rock You one of the biggest musicals ever staged in South Africa. Not only does the show have a large cast, it is also a huge, highly technical and physical production boasting fourteen 40ft pantechnicons of sound equipment. Also making the show unique is the careful guidance the cast and band enjoyed during rehearsals, working under a creative team who work closely with "Queen" band members, Brian May and Roger Taylor who show an intense personal interest in the entire concept of the show, from start to finish.

We Will Rock You continues to play to sold-out houses at London's Dominion Theatre - where it has been running since May 2002, and recently celebrated the distinction of becoming the longest-running musical ever to play at the Dominion, one of the West End's largest theatres. In addition to an ongoing Spanish-language touring production in Spain, We Will Rock You also continues to break box office records in Germany, where it is the number one grossing musical of all time. Globally, more than 5 million people have now seen the show.

We Will Rock You opens in the Playhouse Opera on September 30 to run until October 29. Booking through Computicket outlets or on 083 915 8000 or Playhouse box office on 031 369 9555. Performances Tuesdays to Fridays at 20h00; Saturdays at 16h00 and 20h00 and Sundays at 14h00 and 18h00. Tickets R150 to R350 Tuesdays to Saturdays (both shows) and R100 to R300 on Sundays (both shows). Group bookings through Samantha on 011 340 8128.
