AWARD FOR ZOLA (article first published : 2006-09-21)

Zola, who is hailed as Mzansi’s international asset is set to receive the Special Recognition Award at the 2006 Channel O African Music Video Awards ceremony.

Zola’s story is one true life tale of the great Guluva dream; one man’s rise from the streets of Soweto e Zola to Kwaito’s most wanted. The architect of Kwaito started a solo career that is responsible for four multi platinum albums. He is more than just a musician; he is a poet, an actor and a humanitarian. He is a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador for East Africa in recognition for work done on a TV documentary titled Africa Youth Speak, a documentary screened on Channel O on Africa Day, May 2006 and co-produced by Kabelo “KB” Ngakane.

South Africa’s movie Tsotsi won an Oscar in March 2006 and catapulted his international career further. He has addressed the UN World conference on the Arms Control Bill, was part of a discussion on CNN’s Connects show on South Africa’s progress 12 years into democracy and now he will record a posthumous collaboration with Snoop and hip hop legend Tupac Shakur. Zola has also been instrumental in bringing and facilitating the scattering of Tupac Shakur’s ashes in Soweto, an event that will take place on September 13.

The Awards ceremony will he held at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg on October 15. The event will be recorded “live” and broadcast on Channel O on October 22 at 20h00.
