DR MALOMBO IN DURBAN (article first published : 2006-09-12)

Internationally acclaimed and award winner guitarist Philip Thabane - affectionately known as “Dr Malombo” - and the band will perform in the Durban Meets Culture Jazz Concert at the Playhouse Drama on November 11.

Dr Malombo’s show has been performed all over the world in a career that has spanned over 30 years. Formed in the early sixties, his first musicians include Abe Cindi, Julian Bahula, Mabe Thobejane and the late member percussionist Oupa Mohapi Monareng.

The current band members are Philip Thabane (guitar and vocals), Thabang Thabane (drums and percussion), Mphunye Motau (percussion and vocals), Zakes Ntuli (bass) and his son Thabang, whose brilliant drumming, has always been a spice behind the formidable sounds of Malombo.

Dr Malombo has been awarded a Honorary Doctorate degree in Music Philosophy by the University of Venda in 1998. His music is mostly inspired by the Venda and Pedi people of Limpopo where he was born and resides.

Durban’s famous isicathamiya group Durban Black Drifters will accompany the legendary musician. The other act to watch is Philani Ngidi’s Jazz Quartet featuring Ngidi on bass, veteran sax ace Jerry Kunene, Nick Gonzalez on keyboards and Sean Peterson on drums. The concert takes place at 19h30 on November 11. Tickets R80 pre–booked (R90pp at door) at Computicket or the Playhouse box office on 031 369 9555.
