TWO REQUIEMS (article first published : 2006-09-2)

The Fauré Requiem and the lesser-known Malcolm Archer Requiem featuring The St Anne's College Chapel Choir, The Maritzburg College Choir and The Sine Nomine Singers will be presented in three performances.

Conducted by David Orr and Patrick Harty with Robin Walton at the organ, these will take place in the Pietermaritzburg/Howick area.

The first of the three performances will take place on September 6 at 19h00 at the Hayfields Lutheran Church, Pietermaritzburg. Admission is free with donations in aid of Hospice.

This will be followed by a performance on September 7 at 19h00 at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Howick. Tickets R20 booked through Howick Travel on 033 330 2193.

The final performance takes place during the Witness Hilton Arts Festival on September 16 at 20h00 in the Hilton College Chapel. Contact 033 383 0126 for more details.

The much-loved Fauré Requiem, and the lesser-known Malcolm Archer Requiem, will be performed back to back in a programme which lasts about 70 minutes.

An established choral composer and Director of Music at St Paul's, London, Malcolm Archer wrote his Requiem in 1992. It is similar to the Fauré in structure and full of beautiful melodies. This is certainly the first performance of his Requiem in Pietermaritzburg.

This promises to be a beautiful choral programme not to be missed!
