ANTON & FRANCOIS AT VESTIGE (article first published : 2006-08-8)

Enjoy innovative music and elegant dining with a one-off collaboration between busy and much-loved violinist extraordinaire Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby and South African spontaneous and creative cellist Francois le Roux (aka The HA! Man) who will make a rare trip to Durban to appear in A Nite Out at Vestige in Musgrave on August 11.

These two boundary-breaking acoustic performers have long wanted to create music and perform together. They have enjoyed occasional impromptu jamming sessions in the context of other projects over the years but have never had an opportunity to perform together in a focused dedicated concert. Their respective busy schedules have at last allowed them to be able to do just that.

According to his website, Francois le Roux pushes musical boundaries in an inspirational and spell-bounding way, employing a brilliant array of styles and means of expression. Operating independently, he travels extensively and has gathered an excited following the world over - astonishing audiences with his cello, original electronic accompaniments, keyboard, voice and dances. His music reflects his Southern African roots and his spontaneous approach challenges conventional ideas in both the serious and commercial music environment.

Anton’s versatility, musical integrity and skill allow him to play for a multitude of bands across various musical genres. His particular affinity is with quirky music with a Celtic feel – especially re-working traditional gigs and reels. Together with fellow Celtic musicians Kerry Povall and Ron Uken, they perform an innovative repertoire as Celtis.

He was a founding member of the watershed Durban acoustic band Landscape Prayers performing original compositions with a distinctive gentle acoustic African New Age feel. He also comfortably plays folk, blues, traditional and rock music. Together with Richard Walne, Logan Byrne and Steve du Plessis – they won much applause at the recent Durban Blues Festival with some blues-inspired original compositions.

Ant and Francois’ one-off performance on August 11 promises an evening to remember for lovers of funky, inspired, spontaneous, original and quirky music and performance-art. Vestige Bistro & Bar is on the corner of Musgrave and St Thomas Roads. More information from Mithesh or Mandy on 031 201 7767. The music starts around 20h30.

Keep an open ear for the next feature Veeva Feeva from Western Australia as they make a stop for A Nite Out Session on August 17 while on their South African tour.
