JAZZ/BLUES/FOLK AT UKZN (article first published : 2006-07-29)

The University of KwaZulu-Natalís Centre for Jazz & Popular Music has a varied programme lined up for August. Apart from University events, the programme includes the Durban Folk Club and the Blues Club gatherings.

August 1: Folk Club presents Quark featuring Fiona Tozer (guitar) and Celtis featuring Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby (violin) Logan Byrne (double bass), Keri Povall (flute, vocals) and Ron Uken (guitar, bodhran). Admission R20 (R10 students)

August 2: Mlungisi Gegana Trio featuring Mlungisi (double bass), Valentia Ferlito (piano), Paki Poloeole (drums) and special guest Maya Spector (vocals). Admission R20 (students R5)

There will be no jazz evening on August 9 as the centre will be closed for the public holiday.

August 16: Duplicity featuring Richard Walne (guitar, piano, accordion), Debbi Mari and Carol Trench (vocals), Evan Roberts (piano), Tom Hare (sax), Logan Byrne (double bass) and Gareth Gale (drums).

August 23: Thelonious Sphere II featuring Burton Naidoo (piano), Ian Baggette (double bass) and Donovan Jacob (drums) with Burton performing solo piani in the first set and the trio appearing in the second.

August 25: Blues Club presents Wills Blues Band & Redhouse. Admission: R20 (R10 students)

August 30: Neil Gonsalves Quartet featuring Neil (piano), Mageshen Naidoo (guitar), Philani Ngidi (bass) and Paki Poloeole (drums). Admission R10 (R5 students)

The jazz sessions run from 17h30 to approximately 19h30 (August 30 from 17h30 to 18h30). Unless otherwise indicated, admission is R20 (students R5).There is a cash bar and the programme is subject to change: More information on 031 260 3385.
