FIDDLEFEST #1 (article first published : 2006-07-15)

Friends of Music are to present two exciting events, modelled on the Carnegie Hall, New York, Fiddlefest which featured Isaac Stern and young violinists, to raise funds for underprivileged students.

Friends of Music’s Fiddlefest No.1 on July 25 features A Celebration of Violins with Avigail Bushakovitz (violin), Andrew Warburton (piano) and Baroque 2000 in a programme that features work by Lutoslawski, Brahms, Locatelli and Schubert.

Thanks to support funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the Prelude Performers presentation will feature William Chin and Michelle Hsu (violin).

Avigail Bushakovitz studies violin with Professor Jack de Wet in Cape Town and is the recipient of numerous prizes throughout South Africa. She has performed many times with all the leading orchestras in South Africa. Friends of Music raised R140,000 towards her musical education and she will be leaving to continue her studies overseas next year.

Andrew Warburton completed a BMus degree in piano performance at the University of Natal (now University of KZN), obtaining 95% for his major subjects. Since then he has pursued a diverse career as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician throughout South Africa. At present, he is a full-time lecturer at the Opera School at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Baroque 2000 was founded in 1998. It is a Chamber orchestra specialising in the performance of Baroque music. They are professional musicians mainly attached to the KZNPO and the baroque ensemble performs regularly once a month within a concert series. Baroque featured on the main programme at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in the much-acclaimed ballet opera L’Europe Galante by André Campra.

The concert will take place at 19h45 on July 25 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road, Durban. There is safe parking and a cash bar. Booking is at Computicket.

(The second Fiddlefest concert will feature the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble on July 29)
