JIMBO (article first published : 2006-07-11; last edited : 2008-09-7)

The hit musical Jimbo makes a triumphant return to home base this season, after wowing Playhouse audiences with packed house during its premiere season 13 years ago!

Scripted by local playwright and actor Hamish Kyd, this popular show depicts Durban’s street life and focuses on the city’s coloured community during the 1960s and ’70s. The show’s return season is in the Playhouse Drama and runs from July 11 to 23.

Set to original music by Siva Devar, with lyrics by Kyd and Themi Venturas, this evocative story brings audiences up close with a sharply-drawn cast of characters headed by two character-full hobos. They tell of life lived between heaven and hell, evoking memories of Durban’s Indian Market and Warwick Triangle as they were 40 years ago.

With Themi Venturas in the director’s chair, and up-tempo choreography by Ebrahim Medell, the production features R & B singer Percy Smith in title role, playing opposite Hamish Kyd, the only member of the original cast, as Vishnu.

Casting also includes Jailoshini Naidoo, Cindy Ngidi, Quincy Fynn, T-Bone Hlahane, Quinton Ribbonaar, Daisy Spencer and Daniel Watson. Leading musicians include Melvin Peters, Jeff Judge, Bruce Baker and Iain Bagette.

Tickets pre-booked from R20 to R45 (R30 to R55 at the door). Book through Computicket on 083 915 8000 or Playhouse Dial-A-Seat on 031 369 9596 or 031 369 9540. Bookings for a sold performance, call Mala on 031 369 9456.
