ISINAMUVA LIYABUKWA (article first published : 2006-06-17)

Mic Check started in 1998 as a monthly Saturday matinee. It grew and by 2000 started hosting acts from Johannesburg and Cape Town. In 2001, they helped in the Durban leg of Black August (an international tour with a medley of American hip hop artists). In the same year, they also hosted English hip hop theatre performer Jonzi D.

In 2003 they hosted the African Hip Hop Indaba, a national hip hop festival featuring a number of local acts including Spex and Mizchif. With the large number of talented artists discovered, Mic Check decided to gather and record a compilation to help develop their careers.

The album is titled Isinamuva Liyabukwa (The one who laughs last laughs the loudest) and was recorded at Sonic Studios in Cato Manor by veteran sound engineer Izan Greyling. From a pool of 20 songs, they were able to use 13 and release the album with financial assistance from eThekwini Municipality through Mic Check Entertainment.

The sound on the album is South African without the American twang found in most local hip hop releases and most of the lyrics are in isiZulu which gives it a distinct KZN feel.

The launch will be held at The Beach Club on June 16, doors open at 19h00. The evening will feature performances from most of the artists on the compilation. Amongst those artists will be Zamani, who had a smash last year with Spex called Celebrate. Also featured is Sizwe Dhlomo who now hosts MTV Base, Nkanyiso with his underground classic Umhlola, renowned Zulu poet (Imbongi) - Gladman Ngubo, DJís Paperkut, Renegade, Karabo and DYRís Ntsika amongst many others. This promises to be one of the biggest local hip hop shows this year, with Durban artists headlining the show.
