ORCHESTRA 2006 (article first published : 2006-05-21)

All musicians who play orchestral instruments are urged not to miss Orchestra 2006, the annual concert held at N-Shed NPA Port of Durban at the Durban Harbour T-Jetty.

Last year, over 155 musicians registered to play in the fifth Orchestra concert. The event was a great success and much fun for all involved. Joining them were 20 members of the Steel Drum Foundation band from St Nicholas School and 70 members of the Field Band Foundation marching brass musicians and dancers from Chesterville and Umlazi.

Presented by the British Cultural & Heritage Association, the Orchestra concert is an annual highlight on Durban’s music calendar and aims to bring together musicians from all age groups in KZN for a massed orchestral concert performed under the skilled conducting baton of Richard Cock. Anyone who can read and play orchestral music is encouraged to participate in the project which will provide a unique opportunity for musicians, young and old, to play as part of a massed orchestra.

Players will receive music packs on registration and have to practise the pieces in preparation for the rehearsal which is held on the morning of the concert from 11h30 – when the players get together for the first time! The concerts have done much to generate a renewed interest in amateur performing while supporting and creating awareness for the arts in KZN.

All participants have to register to play and are required to pay a nominal fee of R20 per person to cover administration costs. However bursaries covering the cost of entry fees for disadvantaged groups or musicians are available on request.

Orchestra 2006 will take place on August 13. Registration is now open - forms and further details from the British Cultural & Heritage Association on 031 202 6174 or e-mail bcha1820@global.co.za

Support has been provided by the Department for Arts, Culture and Tourism KZN, Rand Merchant Bank Fund and Regma for Printing.
