EAST MEETS WEST (article first published : 2006-05-16)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal School of Music in association with the Distell Foundation for the Performing Arts, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Consulate General of India, Durban, will present East Meets West, a highly inspiring, cross-cultural project which transcends boundaries by introducing a rare combination of European and Indian instrumentation.

Performed by acclaimed South African musicians who will lead the audience through the concert by explaining the ragas, intricate rhythms and origin of the works, East Meets West lends itself to an exceptionally beautiful blend of Indian and Western Classical music.

Works for sitar, sarod, tabla and cello - where moods range from meditative and delicate to exuberant and ecstatic - are thoughtfully selected to showcase this rare combination.

The programme includes compositions by Karajan, Ali Akhbar Khan and Ravi Shankar. Performers include Vevek Ram (sitar), Haren Tanna (tabla), Rabin Ram (sarod), Berthine van Schoor (cello) and Chats Devroop (saxophone).

East Meets West takes place on May 20 at 19h30 at the Howard College Theatre, University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Bookings through Debbie Mari on 031 260 3353 or marid1@ukzn.ac.za
