MANDLENKOSI WINS! (article first published : 2006-05-15)

The sixth Caltex Isicathamiya High Schools Choir Competition held on May 12 at the Durban Playhouse was a huge success.

“There were 60 choirs competing in this unique and indigenous music of isicathamiya,” explains Chris Ntuli of Durban Black Drifters. “The project started seven years ago and it aims to preserve, promote, educate, develop and transfer skills to youth in this original music which is on the verge of extinction.”

Scooping the first price of R3,000 as well as a brand new computer was Mandlenkosi High School from Lindelani in Durban. Second place went to Nombika High School of Ndwedwe with a prize of R2,000 with Nqabakazulu High School of Kwa Mashu in third place, taking home R1,000. There were ten consolation prizes of R200 and all winners and receivers of consolation prizes were awarded trophies and certificates.

The 6th Caltex High Schools Choir Competition is organised and managed by Durban’s well-known isicathamiya outfit Durban Black Drifters. The group is currently touring 100 schools with workshops sponsored by Royal Netherlands Embassy.

“Caltex Oil is a proud sponsor of the competition from the beginning and we are committed to the project for the long-term,” says James Ngubo Caltex Social Investment Manager”.
