WINNIE THE POOH (article first published : 2006-05-9)

Durban is in for a heart-warming winter treat this July holiday, as a brand new, glossy production of A.A Milne’s Winnie The Pooh

There is no local shortage of youthful talent as has been seen in recent Durban productions. Continuing the trend of showcasing young performers in professional productions are 12 talented and charming children who were selected from a vigorous audition of more than 50 children.

The children’s roles see two girls alternating the role of Kanga’s naughty baby, Roo, and two boys to alternate the role of Christopher Robin. Steven Stead made his professional debut playing Christopher Robin for NAPAC in 1982, and feels a real affinity with the material, knowing just what he is looking for from the young actors.

The other children will be playing the chorus roles of two rabbits, a squirrel and Alexander Beetle as well as Rabbit’s friends and relations.

Playing the part of Pooh will be Rowan Bartlett with Carol Trench as his anxiety-ridden friend, Piglet. Michael Gritten will play Tigger, Anthony Stonier is Rabbit, Alison Cassels takes the role of Kanga and Peter Court as Eeyore with Wendy Watson making her professional debut as Owl. Original music has been written by Justin Southey.

Winnie the Pooh runs in the Playhouse Opera from June 28 to July 16 with performances from Tuesday to Saturday at 14h30 (Sunday at 15h00). There will be shows at 18h00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Book at Computicket.
