CHANNEL O (article first published : 2006-05-2)

During May, Channel O will celebrate Africa’s immeasurable contribution to music, film, theatre and literature in preparation for Africa Day on May 25.

On Tuesdays from 19h00 to 20h00, viewers can enjoy the definitive countdown of the hottest African tracks making waves across the continent. From Nigeria’s Jazzman to South Africa’s Ntando, every video is a fine example of the high quality music that is selling hard and fast in Africa today. Following this programme is Hit Train Latest from 22h00 to 23h00, with the latest releases from hip hop, R&B, and Kwaito favourites.

Big Brother Nigeria is hosted on Saturday and Sunday nights at 21h00 hosted by Channel O’s Nigerian presenter Tana Egbo.

On May 6, from 20h00 to 21h00, Number 10 is a human triumph story chronicling the life of a provincial rugby player as he tries to earn a place on the national team. Colin Moss has been cast as the lead supported by South Africa’s music superstar, Mandoza, whose music has won him fans in South Africa as well as throughout the rest of Africa. This will be Mandoza’s first major role in a feature film. Number 10 is backed by a soundtrack featuring the music of Karen Zoid, Watershed, Mandoza, Steve Hofmeyr, and a rock ballad by Colin Moss himself.

Hit Train Africa on Sundays from 11h00 to 12h00 offers 60 minutes of uninterrupted original African talent providing a unique showcase for the many outstanding bands of Africa.

Snoop Dogg features on May 13 at 20h00 followed by Hit Train – The Old Skool on May 14 at 09h00 with classic moments in urban music such as TLC’s smash hit Water Falls, Alicia Keys and Fallin’, If I Ruled The World.

On May 16 at 21h00, South Africa’s leading hip hop head and recording artist, Proverb fronts this weekly round up of what’s hot in the world of African and American hip hop. Appearing on May 20 at 20h00 are Freshly Ground, the latest Afro Pop sensation to have taken the international music industry by storm formed in 2002 and is made up of musicians from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

On May 21 at 18h00, Soweto rapper, Mr Selwyn, picks the videos. Find out why he rates Prokid, WiKid, Skwatta Kamp and H2O and rejoice in the abundant supply of first rate SA hip hop.

On May 27 from 20h00 viewers can enjoy UNICEF In Ethiopia. The United Nations children’s fund gathered in Ethiopia recently for a cultural exchange with a group of musicians and DJ’s from South Africa including Zola and Channel O’s KB. Channel O offers the highlights of this youth dialogue, a cultural exchange featuring music, dance and film that is inspiring, influential and in touch!
