GYPSY KINGS FOR SUNCOAST (article first published : 2006-04-25)

Immerse yourself in Latino-flamenco nostalgia and enjoy an evening of sublime Gypsy King music performed by Cape Town’s Los Latinos presented by veteran producer Jayson Jay King in a short season at the Suncoast Casino from May 3 to 14, double-billed with the Cape Town Three Tenors.

The original Gypsy Kings, founded by Chico Bouchici of Marseilles in France, brought to life a musical fusion of contemporary Flamenco and Pop. They travelled all over the world to record- breaking audiences including Sun City during the early 90’s before the group broke up, leaving a significant musical legacy which is still acknowledged today.

The Gypsy Kings are presented by experienced producer Jayson Jay King who is best known from his Great Pretenders concerts held throughout the country during the past decade.

He was recently rated as “Mr.Showbiz” by the Star critic in Johannesburg. Born in Cape Town, Jayson has been an entertainer for almost 45 years. He is an accomplished singer that can imitate just about any international recording star. Appropriately he is paying tribute to Spanish heartthrob Julio Iglesias in this production. He sings in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French and English … and plays percussion.

Los Latinos frontman, Issy Begg, has mastered the gruff sounds of a gypsy vocalist and sings in fluent Spanish, Arabic and English. His voice flirts with the audience and he has smouldering Latino looks to match! Issy formed Los Latinos about eight years ago along with three other accomplished musicians and have become the most popular Latin outfit around.

On the musical menu are Gypsy King hits which include Volare; My Way; Djobi Djoba; Quero Saber; Bamboleo and Marina Marina.

The evening comprises a double bill. Opening the act are the Cape Town Three Tenors, a youthful trio with velvet voices who Jayson King discovered during a school workshop in 1997 and continued to mentor. The group comprises Mpendulo Yawa, Anthony Kuse and Loyiso Flente who have been buddies since primary school days in the township of Gugulethu on Cape Town’s Cape Flats. The Three Tenors scooped a great opportunity to sing for Nelson Mandela on Robben Island in 2000.

Gypsy Kings and Three Tenors in Concert runs at the Suncoast Casino from May 3 to 14 nightly at 19h30 (no show Monday). Tickets R80 (R72 concessions) booked through Computicket and Suncoast.
