KZNPO WINTER WARMTH (article first published : 2006-04-23)

In this year of musical landmarks for the KZN Philharmonic, the orchestra celebrates the second instalment of the 10th anniversary of the KZNPO's World Symphony Series in the Durban City Hall.

Perennial podium favourite Leslie B Dunner returns to launch the Winter Season on May 18 with a Mostly Mozart programme. This will feature Christopher Duigan as soloist in the Piano Concerto No 19 in F Major K459. Haydn's early masterpiece, the Symphony No 8 (the third of the famous Morning, Noon and Night trilogy) leavens the mix, before the Durban Symphonic Choir show their paces in their 40th anniversary year with Mozart's jubilant Coronation Mass in C Major K317. Guest soloists are Bongi Simelane (soprano), Charlotte Stoppelenburg (mezzo soprano), Mhlonishwa Dlamini (tenor) and Juan Burgers (baritone).

Dr Dunner returns for the second of his two Winter Season appearances on May 25, sharing the stage with Israeli virtuoso Aviram Reichert, another KZNPO audience favourite. The late classical grandeur of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 3 in C minor and Shostakovitch's profoundly personal 10th Symphony promise an evening of richly diverse listening.

Italian opera highlights are on the roster for June 1. Sponsored by the Arena di Verona in association with the Italian Institute of Culture in Pretoria and the Italian Consulate in Durban, conductor Armando Tasso, soprano Daniela Longhi and tenor Luigi Frattola will perform popular extracts from Puccini's Manon Lescaut, Giordano's Andrea Chenier and Cilea's Adriano Lecouvreur.

Nicholas Cleobury, the conductor for the following week's concert on June 8, provides a cerebral antidote to this steamy verisimo fare, with a programme of Ravel and Copland. Spencer Myer, the third piano soloist of the season, will essay both Ravel's Left Hand Concerto and the G Major Concerto in one evening, no mean feat, while the orchestral suites Apalachian Spring and El Salon Mexico should keep the KZNPO players on their toes.

Cleobury returns to the podium on June 15 for Dvorak's Cello Concerto with Russian cellist Grigory Alumyan as soloist. The rest of the programme includes Smetana's The Bartered Bride Overture and Schumann's Symphony No 4.

On June 22, French clarinettist-conductor Antoine Marguire makes his KZNPO debut with performances of Mozart's Symphony No 34 and Schubert's Fifth Symphony. This programme also sees the return of violinist Rafal Zambrzycki-Payne after his local debut last year, for Mozart's Violin Concerto No 5 in A Major K 219.

Antoine Marguire brings the curtain down on the season on June 29 with another programme of concert favourites: Beethoven's Egmont Overture, Chopin's Piano Concerto No I in E Minor, with pianist Ilan Rogoff back in the spotlight, and Dvorak's Sixth Symphony.

Substantial discounts off season ticket prices are offered to subscribers. To subscribe to the KZNPO's Winter Season, call 031 369 9404 or email bookings@kznpo.co.za. Single tickets are also available at Computicket.
