WHEN BASIL MET ELVIS - RETURNS! (article first published : 2006-04-21)

Some of the city's top theatrical talent has been re-assembled for the return season of the fabulous new musical-comedy, When Basil Met Elvis, which is coming back due to popular demand at the Catalina Theatre in Wilson's Wharf from May 2 to 14.

Meet Basil Pesto (Clinton Philander) Elvis's gawky, enthusiastic, star-struck number one fan, as he follows his idol Elvis around hoping to shake his hero's hand (John Didlick as the older Elvis and his son Johnathan Didlick as the younger Elvis). Basil's dream may come true when Elvis comes to town. Everything - of course - goes horribly wrong and Basil ends up by saving the day through a comedy of errors assisted by his friend, ex-showgirl Saffron Bowls (Marion Loudon).

This hilarious new musical revue is conceived and written by Clinton Philander - best remembered for his role in Air Guitar. It celebrates some of the music of the King of Rock 'n Roll and his contemporaries.

Directed by Clinton Philander and Themi Venturas, the toe-tapping comedy is set to make audiences roll in the aisles and dance in their seats as they romp through a great line up of memorable musical numbers. Musical Direction is by Callie Thompson who performs with a live band featuring husband Barry Thompson alternating with Rowan Stuart on guitar, Shaun Peterson on drums and Nikki Lotter on bass.

Clinton and John last worked together in the musical tribute to Nat King Cole at 214 St Thomas Road which featured Clinton's youthful son, Josh, in the cast. The tables are turned for this production as this time it features John's son, Johnathan, appearing for the first time with his father on stage at the Catalina.

This show is a must for all Elvis enthusiasts and fans of the musical revue genre.

Performances from May 2 to 14, Tuesdays to Saturdays at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00) with no shows on Monday. Tickets R70 (R60 concessions) booked on 031 305 6889.
