SIPHO GUMEDE TRIBUTE (article first published : 2006-04-9)

The BAT Centre will pay tribute to one of the country’s most talented musicians – the late Sipho Gumede – over the Easter long weekend with a series of events and concerts to honour his life and music.

Sipho Gumede – his life, work, music and legacy – will be the focus of a Saturday night concert, Friday sundowner jazz; Sunday afternoon jazz and a special commemorative tribute on his birthday on April 17.

The highlight of the weekend will be the Saturday night Tribute to Sipho Gumede gala concert. The musical line up includes the 11 musicians who shared the stage and recording studio with Sipho for much of his professional career. They will perform a dozen of Sipho’s best known and most popular tunes. Also in the line up is jazz heavyweight Don Laka; the ever-popular Ernie Smith and songstress Thembi Mtshali. All performers have enjoyed a musical relationship at different times and at different forums with Sipho Gumede.

The concert starts at 20h00 and tickets cost R80pp. The first hundred people to book can enjoy a complimentary drink on the night. There will also be lucky-draws throughout the evening giving away music and merchandise.

This concert will be the first to be enjoyed in the newly-air-conditioned Bat Hall. The hall is enjoying the fruits of a centre-wide refurbishment process and boasts brand new airconditioning and a much-upgraded sound system which will also be used for the first time at the Sipho concert.

The popular afro-jazz sundowner concerts on the deck on Friday as the sun sets (from 18h00) and Sunday afternoons (from 15h00) continue the Sipho theme with colleagues and fans of Sipho performing in tribute concerts to him. On Friday is the turn of Mixed Culture and on Sunday it will be Skokiana. Both concerts are as always, free of charge.

On Sipho’s actual birthday – there will be a commemorative evening with tributes, video footage, music, memories and a photo display. Music content will be provided by, among others, Jika and the eThekwini All Stars. This free concert takes place from noon on Monday.

For more information about the weekend or to book for the Saturday Tribute concert, phone the BAT Centre during office hours on 031 332 0451.
