MERCURY RISING (article first published : 2006-04-3)

Mercury Rising is an award-winning musical revue saluting the King of Queen - rock icon Freddie Mercury. In addition to tributes to the stadium rock numbers for which Queen was well known for, the show also features some of Freddie Mercury's equally beautiful ballads.

Mercury Rising will see the partnering of red hot performers Duncan Royce, Kate Normington, Crystal Tryon and du Preez Strauss.

Duncan is best known for his exceptional interpretations of the music of Freddie Mercury in Queen at the Opera and Mercury Rising. He has also appeared in many musicals including Hello Dolly, Oklahoma!, West Side Story, The Rocky Horror Show, Jesus Christ Superstar and The Return To The Forbidden Planet for which he received FNB Vita awards for Best Supporting Actor and Most Outstanding Performance In A Musical. Kate Normington and Crystal Tryon are both well-known Durban favourites, having appeared in a number of musicals.

In 2004, Duncan performed in the world tour of Rock Legends In Concert which took him to the UK, USA, South Africa, New Zealand and Hawaii. Accompanied by a 60 piece orchestra, he sang the vocally demanding Freddie Mercury role to rapturous applause, critical acclaim and full houses. He has recently directed the South African premier of Childrenís Letters to God which was nominated for a Naledi Award for Best musical of 2005. He has also recently ended a season of Queen at the Ballet at Spier, ArtsCape Theatre and the Montecasino Theatre.

The singers will perform favourite songs such as Barcelona, Itís Beautiful Day, Under Pressure, The World We Created, Miracle, I Want to Break Free, Bohemian Rhapsody, Born to Love You and many more. An additional feature is the additional classical pas de deux.

This show began its life in South Africa at the now defunct Langoustine Theatre in Durban North where it ran to full houses and critical acclaim. It then returned to Durban and played at the Sneddon Theatre for a sell-out season in 2001 when it won a Vita Award for best musical.

Subsequent to that run it has enjoyed sell out seasons at The Civic Theatre in Johannesburg and the Barnyard Theatre in Cresta and Menlyn Park. In November 2005 the show made its international debut at the DBS Arts Centre, in Singapore where it ran for three weeks.

Mercury Rising runs for a limited season only at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from April 6 to 30 with performances from Tuesday to Friday at 20h00 (Saturdays 18h00 and 21h00 and Sundays 18h00) Book at Computicket.
