FOOLS AWARDS (article first published : 2006-03-24)

The general public is currently voting online for the Fools Awards 2006 in all performing disciplines. This is the fourth year the Durban-based publicity company, Copy Dog, has presented the event. The Fools Award trophy is a beautifully detailed jester’s stick, or Ninny Stick, designed by gifted Durban artist Wendy Nell.

The award ceremony will be held on April 1 in the Playhouse Loft following a performance of popular Durban entertainer Lisa Bobbert’s hit one-woman comedy, Bobbert Uncut directed by Caroline Smart.

Listed below are the two top contenders in the various categories – but remember, anything can happen between now and the close of voting on Sunday:

Breakthrough Actress - Josette Eales and Janna Ramos Violante; Breakthrough Actor - Liam Magner and Jacobus van Heerden; Actress - Liesl Coppin and Clare Mortimer, Actor - Neil Coppen and Afzal Khan; Director - Murray McGibbon and Steven Stead; Script - Greig Coetzee, John van de Ruit and Ben Voss (Black Mamba) and Rajesh Gopie (The Coolie Odyssey).

In the design categories the leaders are: Costume - Peter Court and Terrence Bray; Set - Jane Cross/Megan Levy and Greg King; Lighting - Michael Broderick and Richard Parker; Poster - Greg King & Garden of Earthly Design (Jack & His Big Stalk) and Anthony Stonier (Frank ‘n Stein).

Up for best theatre production are The Coolie Odyssey and Frank ‘n Stein with The Frog Prince and Snow White being hot contenders for Children’s Production. Leading the field for student production are the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Noises Off and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In the dance category, there’s: Male Dancer - Musa Hlatshwayo and Siyanda Duma; Female Dancer - Louise Fraquet and Neliswa Rushualang; Choreographer - David Gouldie and Jay Pather; Dance Company - Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company and Phenduka Dance theatre, and Dance Production - Acts of Love under a Southern Moon and Chalo Cinema.

In the music category: Classical Musician - Christopher Duigan and Andrew Warburton; Contemporary Musician - Evan Roberts and Nibs van der Spuy; Female Singer - Karen Wood and Carol Trench; Male Singer - Joel Zuma and Anthony Stonier; Classical Musical Group - The Kermiov Trio and the Wouter Quartet; Contemporary Group - Cynosure and Burlesque Super Group, Classical Music Production - Bravo! Opera and Music Revival, and Contemporary Music Production - Let the Good Times Roll and The Sound of Music.

Terrence Bray and Rosanne Immelman are vying for Fashion Designer and well-known Durban artists Andrew Verster and Aidan Walsh are top favourites for Visual Artist. Damon Beard and Fiona Ramsay are the leaders for Radio Personality. Best Writer could go to either Kobus Moolman or Terrence Pillay.

The Sunday Tribune SM comes on board this year as media partner for the annual Fools Awards. Celebrating SM’s participation, the 2006 awards structure sees the introduction of the SM Award, presented in recognition of the most popular comedian. Leading the field are Rowan Bartlett and Afzal Khan.

This is the situation as at March 23 – but things could change by the closing of voting on Sunday (March 26). Go to www.at.artslink.co.za/~copydog and cast your vote!
