NATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL (article first published : 2006-03-18)

The ATKV is hosting a national choir festival for mixed adult choirs for the 17th year. Running in conjunction with this, is an enlightening Choirmasters’ Training Session for Choirmasters and conductors of all the participating choirs.

Music is the universal language across all cultures. ATKV-Koorfees is a multicultural project with which the ATKV endeavours to create better understanding, respect and confidence between different communities and cultural groups by means of Afrikaans choral music.

The focus of ATKV-Koorfees is on the development of choral music in various communities. Therefore great emphasis is placed on the Choirmasters’ Training Session. The better each choirmaster is equipped, the better the end result. The Training Session levels the playing field and ensures equal opportunities to all our participants.

The training session consists of the following elements: Rules and logistics for ATKV-Koorfees; conducting skills and technique; voice training; voice building in a group; music notation and sight reading and interpretation of songs. Further instruction will be given on management and marketing strategies.

The training sessions are not only informative and rewarding, but also interactive and a great opportunity to work with some of the most prominent leaders on the choir front.

Choirmasters’ Training sessions take place from March 31 to April 2 in Johannesburg and from April 7 to 9 in East London. The entry fee for this Choirmaster’ Training Session including the participation in the Festival is R700. An amount of R500 is payable for each additional member of each choir who attends the session.

Regional competitions will held throughout South Africa. This will depend on the entries received from various areas. The grand finale will take place on October 21 in Port Elizabeth. Transport will be arranged by the ATKV for the top 6 choirs.

Prize money includes a first prize of R10,000 with second and third prizes being R5,000 and R3,000 respectively. Prize monies will also be paid to winners of the regional semi-finals.
