CELTIS IN JOZI (article first published : 2006-03-18)

Hot Durban-based Irish group, Celtis, has slipped into Jozi for a few performances this weekend.

Featuring the inimitable ex-Landscape Prayers violinist, Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby, Keri Povall on flute and whistles and Ron Uken on guitar and bodhran (Irish frame drum), Celtis developed out of a shared passion for traditional Irish music. The group plays traditional Irish tunes along with some Scottish and Breton pieces, typified by a combination of reels, jigs and hornpipes - a music tradition that can be traced back to the 17th century. As well as the traditional standards, Celtis performs more contemporary arrangements by bands such as Flook and Capercaillie, along with a number of their own pieces, composed by Anton.

The first performance takes place on March 17 at La Terrazza, Mountain Lake Shopping Centre, Hartbeestport Dam, next to Pecanwood) at 19h30. Tickets R20 booked through Desiree on 012 244 0667. This will be followed by an appearance on March 18 at Route 66/Old Music Farm, Hartebeeshoek Road, Hartbeestport Dam, at 19h30 for 20h00 (tickets R30 booked through Nino on 012 253 0351 or 083 372 8118).

On March 19, Celtis will again appear at Route 66/Old Music Farm in a brunch session from 09h00 to 12h00. Same ticket price and contact numbers.

Later on March 19, Celtis moves to Otherworld, Plot 151 Beyers Naude Drive, Muldersdrift, to perform from 17h00 onwards. Tickets R50 booked through Sue on 011 957 2921 or 082 451 2268.

Violinist Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby was a member of Landscape Prayers for nine years, during which time four acclaimed albums were released. Since 2003, Ant has freelanced, working with a number of different artists and projects - notably The World in a Guitar and Butter with Roly Struckmeyer, as well as featuring in the 2005 Durban International Blues Festival. He is an ad hoc player with KZNPO and concertmaster for the Durban City Orchestra.

Keri Povall has a classical flute performance degree and has worked extensively as an extra player for the KZNPO. She has performed with Opera Africa and in the Howard College and Tatham Art Gallery Ensemble lunch hour concerts.

Celtis has performed at folk clubs in Pietermaritzburg and Durban, and the Emoyeni and uMthombe Kei Mouth music festivals. The group is one of the feature acts at Splashy Fen Music Festival in April this year.
