PAT MATSHIKIZA FOR KRAKATOA (article first published : 2006-03-12)

Respected and celebrated jazz pianist and composer Pat Matshikiza will perform at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdomís Krakatoa on March 12 at 18h00.

Matshikiza has recently released an album entitled Seasons, Masks and Keys and his concert will feature some tracks from this album, as well as some older tracks from his vast repertoire peppered with some jazz standards.

He will perform with Johannesburg vocalist Khanya Cele and local jazz heroes Philani Ngidi (bass) and Jerry Kunene (saxophone) along with rising talent Paki Peloele (drums).

One of South Africanís greatest jazz legends, Matshikiza was born in Queenstown in 1938. His earliest performance memories go back to playing piano at home and in eisteddfods during the 40ís and the early 50s. A qualified teacher, he was unable to find work in his home town, but eventually made his way to Dorkay House, Johannesburg, where he performed with South African greats such as Kippie Moeketsi, Ben Masinga and Letta Mbuli in the mid-1960s.

In the early seventies he recorded the enormously popular Tshona with Moeketsi which sold 22,000 copies. His new album is largely a retrospective of Matshikiza's career and local audiences will be given a rare opportunity to hear these works by one of South Africaís brightest stars as he hits the keyboard!

Tickets R40 booked through Sibaya Box Office or at the door at Krakatoa. Show starts at 18h00 at Krakatoa, Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, Umhlanga Rocks.
