BRAVISSIMO OPERA (article first published : 2006-03-9)

Following the sensational success of last year’s Bravo –Opera, the Playhouse Company’s sparkling 2006 Opera Season, Bravissimo – Opera, offers a superb new showcase of famous acts from Puccini’s La Boheme and Tosca, Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann and Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier.

Each of these celebrated four acts abounds with musical riches that include famous show-stoppers such as Musetta’s Waltz Song Quando m’en vo, Tosca’s heart-rending plea for mercy, Visi d’Arte, Offenbach’s Baccarole (arguably the most famous household hit in all opera); culminating in the deeply touching final scene from Strauss’s great Viennese classic. These musical richest are performed by some of the South Africa’s finest opera stars with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, Africa’s premiere orchestra, offset by magnificent sets and costumes that capture the full allure of opera in all its glory.

Bravissimo – Opera boasts a stellar line-up of big names including Sally Silver (former Sally June Gain of Durban), Linda Bukhosini, Nkosozana Dimande, Veramarie Meyer, Bongani Tembe, Stefan Louw, Fikile Mvinjelwa and Beverley Chiat. The spectacular production is directed by Ralph Lawson, with superb costumes by fashion guru Terrence Bray and sumptuous décor by Irek Karamon. Musical preparation is by Juan Burgers with Graham Scott at the helm of the KZNPO.

Bravissimo – Opera will be staged in the Playhouse Opera on March 25, 28, 31 at 19h30 and on April 2 at 15h00.

Pre-booked tickets range from R35 to R85. Tickets bought at the box office an hour before curtain-up range from R50 to R100. Book at Computicket on 083 915 8000 or Playhouse Dial-A-Seat on 031-369 9596/9540.
