DEATH OF GARY CARTER (article first published : 2006-03-6)

Gary Edward Carter (65) passed away in Durban last month. A familiar figure seen around the Playhouse complex for many years, he was originally a member of several choirs on an amateur basis before he joined the Napac Singers. The Napac Singers were later to become the Playhouse Singers, a highly active and well-knit professional singing group that is sadly now defunct.

Described by Rosalie Conrad, well-known singing teacher, choral conductor and examiner, as the backbone of the tenor section, he gave up a lucrative and high profile position in the commercial world to follow his passion of singing when he joined the Napac Singers on a full-time basis. He appeared in numerous musicals and music productions and was understudy for the role of Pinkerton in a production of Madama Butterfly.
