SONTONGA QUARTET & FRIENDS (article first published : 2006-02-14)

Following sold-out performances in Johannesburg, celebrate Mozartís 250th anniversary with one of the countryís foremost chamber groups - The Sontonga Quartet - and friends. They will present the first four of Mozartís great Viennese Piano Concertos (11 Ė 14) over two evenings and two well-known KZN pianists will appear in each programme.

Programme one takes place on February 24 at 19h30 at the Howard College Theatre, UKZN. It features Mozart Piano Concertos K413 & K415 performed by solo pianists Jill Richards and Christopher Duigan.

Programme Two takes place on February 25 at 19h45 at the Durban Jewish Centre in Old Fort Road. On the programme will be Mozart Piano Concertos K414 & K449 and the Clarinet Quintet K581 with soloists Jonathan Oshry (piano), Andrew Warburton (piano) and Ian Holloway (clarinet).

It is a rare treat to hear Mozart up close and personal in a chamber music context performed by acclaimed musicians. The busy and resourceful Sontonga Quartet is one of the countryís top chamber groups who do not benefit from any major grants and subsidies. They travel throughout South Africa performing public concerts and working with school-groups and developmental programmes.

Tickets R40 per concert (R70 if you buy for both). More information on 082 335 6088. Book at Computicket or at www.computicket.com
