FINCH & HENSON (article first published : 2006-02-8)

All those who saw guitar virtuoso Ken E Henson in action in the ‘Song Riders’ at the Catalina Theatre at the end of last month will be pleased to know that he is returning to our shores with his long-time musical partner, Brian Finch. This time, however, they will be performing at the Dockyard Supper Theatre on the Point Waterfront.

The duo, commonly known as Finch and Henson have their roots firmly grounded in the 60s and have performed in literally every town in South Africa. An article which appeared in the Daily Mail in 1977 sums up the duo as follows: ‘Finch is a gutsy, free-and-easy troubadour whose roots are firmly embedded in the rich soil of folk. Henson is a versatile musician whose excursions into the realms of jazz and rock have a distinctly cerebral orientation.’

Brian is the more vocal of the duo and was strongly influenced by Bob Dylan’s music whereas Ken E turned more to classical guitar, jazz and blues – he’s more the instrumentalist who attunes himself to Brian’s vocals and guitar. In an interview which appeared in Zig Zag June / August 1978 Brian said: ‘I write the songs and Kenny puts all the frills, adds in the melody on guitar and puts in all the solos.’

Finch and Henson can be caught in action at the Dockyard Supper Theatre for eight days from 17 – 26 February. Tickets are R80pp. An A-la-Carte menu is available as well as a cash bar. The show starts at 8:30pm. For further information or to book contact Karen or Melissa on 031 332 1086.
