KZNPO LIVE BROADCAST (article first published : 2006-02-7)

Music lovers from around the country will enjoy a rare privilege of hearing a live broadcast of the KZNPO when SAfm will broadcast the opening concert of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s World Symphony Series (WSS) Summer Season from Durban City Hall on February 9.

‘SAfm has always had a commitment to the arts in South Africa – and where possible, to live coverage of events and concerts,” said SAfm’s station manager, Mapule Mbhalati. “We are delighted to be involved in the opening of the 10th anniversary of the KZN Philharmonic’s World Symphony Series. Our broadcasting partnership with this vibrant organisation goes back some years and the occasion is made even more auspicious by the inauguration of the new Steinway concert grand piano. So we say Phambili to the arts in KwaZulu-Natal and to the KZNPO in particular.”

Bongani Tembe, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the KZNPO said, “Our partnership with the SABC, particularly SAfm, is going from strength to strength, as demonstrated by their decision to broadcast our opening concert live on Thursday. We appreciate the very positive role that they, and indeed other media, have played in promoting the events of the KZNPO.

“Our WSS concerts have seen an ongoing infusion into Durban of the world’s top artists, thus immeasurably enriching the cultural environment of this City’s concert-going public. Plus the listeners to SAfm also benefit from being able to hear all these wonderful artists when the concerts are broadcast,” said Bongani Tembe.

Saki Macozoma, Chairman of the KZNPO enthused “What’s a more fitting way to celebrate this momentous occasion than with the unveiling of our superb, brand-new Steinway Concert Grand piano. This truly magnificent gift from an anonymous donor will bring untold joy for years to come, not only to our ever-growing audience but also to the artists who will have the pleasure of marrying their skills and artistry with its endlessly alluring tonal riches”.

The concert starts at 19h30 and tickets are available through Computicket or at the door on the night of the concert.
