MUSIC OF SPAIN (article first published : 2006-02-2)

Music Revival presents the beautifully detailed playing of Cape Town-based guitarist James Grace in Hilton on February 17. Following his recital in Hilton last June, James Grace returns for an intimate Friday evening concert at Gallery NINETEEN DEGREES.

He will play selections from his debut solo CD, Granada: The Music of Spain. Included are several of the most acclaimed Spanish classical guitar pieces by Albeniz and Tarrega.

James Grace studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Carlos Bonell. Upon graduating he received the Tagore Gold Medal, an annual award presented to the most outstanding student. James is particularly proud of this, as he is the first guitarist in the history of the College to have been honoured with this accolade. An experienced performer, he has played throughout South Africa, Europe and the Middle East. He has recorded for the SABC, Britainís Classic FM and the BBC.

After spending two years based in the Middle East, James returned to Cape Town in 2003 and started working with long-time friend and playing partner Saudiq Khan. They released their first album together entitled Granasturias the following year. In 2004, James made his orchestral debut as the soloist in Rodrigoís Concierto de Aranjuez with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor David Scarr.

Jamesís first solo album, Granada, was officially launched with a concert at the Baxter Concert Hall on November 5. James is Head of Classical Guitar at the University of Cape Town.

The concert takes place at 18h30 on February 17 at Gallery NINETEEN DEGREES which is situated at 486 Celtis Road, Hilton (off Old Howick Road). Tickets R100 pp include soup and bread (bring your own drinks). Booking essential on 033 342 3051, e-mail: chris@musicrevival.co.za or visit www.musicrevival.co.za for more information.
