GUY BUTTERY (article first published : 2006-01-31)

On February 7, the Durban Folk Club will feature guitarist Guy Buttery when he will be joined by some of Durban's best musicians. Also featured will be solo sets from Roly Struckmeyer and Roz Thomson.

In the last six months since the release of Guy Buttery's sophomore release, Songs from the Cane Fields, Guy has been busy. Touring the Cape twice, performing numerous shows and festivals all around the country either as a solo artist or with his friend Nibs van der Spuy, composing soundtracks for documentaries and recording a new duo live album scheduled to be out later in the year. On top of all this, between all the shows and studio's, Guy still manages to teach and write music.

After a long wait over the festive season, the Durban Folk Club will open the year with this legendary performance of Guy Buttery and friends. The show will be a unique collaboration including the likes of Nibs van der Spuy (guitars), Gareth Gale (percussion), Barry Corden (guitars) and Angus Kerr (violin). The evening will consist of his usual favourites on guitar, sitar and mandolin with guest spots through-out the performance.

In March, Guy will be off to Morocco for further back-packing adventures for many weeks, making this show his last in Durban for some time.

Catch Guy Buttery live on February 7 at 17h30 at the Jazz Centre, University of KwaZulu-Natal Durban campus. Entrance R20 (R10 members and students). There is a cash bar and secure parking. More information from Fiona on 072 822 7988.
