SONGWRITING MASTERCLASS (article first published : 2006-01-24)

The awesome combined musical talent of the Song Riders company will host a Songwriting Masterclass for aspirant and established lyricists at the Catalina Theatre on January 28 from 14h00 until 16h00 hosted by Wendy Oldfield, Roger Lucey and Neill Solomon who are in town to perform in Song Riders at the Catalina from January 25 to 29.

They will host the Masterclass in conjunction with PANSA – the Performing Arts Network of South Africa, KZN Chapter. This follows on the remarkably successful Masterclass PANSA held for actors and directors as part of the Musho! Theatre Festival earlier this month attended by 60 industry professionals and run by Art United from Holland.

This time, the focus is on songwriting – in particular methods and styles of songwriting. The three talented musicians and respected lyricists will run the Masterclass with both a theory and a practical element to it. Participants are invited to take along a musical instrument and the words to a recently-written song they have penned.

The Masterclass is free and all are welcome. There will be a donation box at the door if participants would like to contribute financially towards the event.

Wendy, Roger and Neill are part of Song Riders who are performing at the Catalina from January 25 to 29. During the ‘60s, '70s and '80s, Durban was where South Africa's most innovative, boundary-breaking original music was being created by a generation of talented, fearless, skilled musicians. A series of concerts featuring some of these outstanding musicians – known as the Song Riders - will run at the Catalina Theatre in Wilson’s Wharf from January 25 to 29, once more reuniting some of the "ringleaders" from this magical musical era with some of their contemporary counterparts.

Legendary singer/songwriter Wendy Oldfield joins the renowned Song Riders on January 27, 28 and 29 for what promises to be an awesome three nights at the Catalina Theatre. Adding their special blend of contemporary acoustic guitar wizardry will be Nibs van der Spuy and Guy Buttery who provide special guest performances on January 25 and 26. Evocative multi media images by Paul Weinberg and Roger Lucey enhance the stories and performance even further.

To book for the Song Riders shows or reserve your space for the Masterclass on January 28 from 14h00 to 16h00, contact Thandeka, Liesl or Janice on 031 305 6889. The show runs from January 25 to 29 nightly at 20h00 (Sunday at 18h00). Tickets R65.
