THE SONGRYDERS (article first published : 2006-01-5)

From January 25 to 29, the Catalina Theatre will host the reunion of the “Songryders” the masterful musos who put Durban on the musical map more than two decades ago.

During the '70s and '80s, Durban represented the melting pot where South Africa's most innovative, boundary-breaking original music was being created by a generation of talented, fearless, skilled performers. A unique series of concerts featuring some of the industry’s most outstanding, experienced musicians will take place at the Catalina Theatre from January 25 to 29 reuniting the "ringleaders" from this magical musical era.

The legendary Roger Lucey, Neill Solomon, Ken E Henson and Dan Chiorboli are the Song Ryders. They will be accompanied on the first two nights by special guest appearances by Nibs Van Der Spuy and Guy Buttery and on the next few nights by BAFO BAFO (aka Madala Kunene and Syd Kitchen) offering a great musical beginning to the new year.

“Some say it's the steamy tropical climate, others talk about the unique lifestyle that sets this port city apart from the rest of the country. Whatever the reason, the city of Durban has, over many decades, produced an incredible number of South Africa’s finest artists,” says Dan Chiorboli.

The Songryders will have performances nightly at 20h00 (Sunday at 18h00). Bookings through Liesl or Janice on 031 305 6889. For block booking discounts and charity fundraisers call Glenda on 031 305 7612.
