BLUE PLANET SUPPORTS OSCA (article first published : 2005-11-30)

Blue Planet Media is delighted to announce that its social responsibility project for 2006 will be the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Opera Studio and Choral Academy (OSCA).

Launched in 2000 after sponsorship from overseas grant maker, The Atlantic Philanthropies, OSCA was founded by renowned opera critic Max Loppert - formerly of London’s Financial Times - and his wife Delayne, South-African-born journalist, editor and former Amnesty International Director of Publications.

One of OSCA’s goals is to create a Centre of Excellence in KwaZulu-Natal – the epicentre of song in South Africa. Blue Planet will actively involve itself helping to raise local and international awareness of OSCA, sponsorship and fundraising – all of which will assist in retaining the wealth of indigenous operatic and choral talent in this country.

“Talent in South Africa comes in many forms and across endless disciplines and professions,” says BPM’s Jason Aarons. “Our social responsibility programme is our way of helping to nurture and retain the incredible talents of OSCA; and to visibly acknowledge what the Rainbow Nation can create and develop.

“In essence, it really is all about being proudly South African and affording individuals from previously historically disadvantaged backgrounds, solid, long-term opportunities, personal and professional growth and successes. It is also our way of recognising the need the media/publishing industry should play in such arenas.”
