BEST OF BLUE MONDAY PLATFORM (article first published : 2005-10-17)

The Blue Monday Platform is an initiative spearheaded by PANSA (the Performing Arts Network of SA). It offers an open mic opportunity for performing artists, allowing them a platform to express themselves and their views, acts, talents and skills. The time frame for each performer is fifteen minutes and anything from poetry, theatre, skits, music, dance and stand-up comedy is encouraged.

Made possible by PANSA and the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism: eThekwini Cluster, The Best of The Blue Monday Platform will have a four-day run at the Catalina Theatre. After a successful run at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival in September, the season will showcase the cream of the crop of edgy, ambitious and exciting new talent coming through the Blue Monday Platform.

The Best of The Blue Monday Platform comprises four acts: profound music, musical skit and two theatre snippets. Vocalist Kasia Stempowski and guitarist Stephen Murray will perform original alternative folk-rock. The Neon Anthems are back and this time Liam Magner and Kobus van Heerden will amuse with their outrageous comedy. Caroline Burne (recently seen in Noises Off) will showcase her acting and writing skills in an original theatre piece about a small-town woman searching for a brighter future ... on a Greyhound bus.

Energetic newcomer to the Catalina Theatre is Sphamandle Mzobe. His production of Taste Like Strawberries will enjoy a full run at The Playhouse in early November.

"Come and enjoy an evening of diverse acts all rolled into one show at the picturesque setting of the Catalina Theatre. In the foyer will be some visual art and some in impromptu entertainment as well. All the more reason to join in on the fun with The Best of The Blue Monday Platform," says PANSA and Blue Monday Platform committee member, Sophie Thompson.

The Best of The Blue Monday Platform takes place at 20h00 at Catalina Theatre on Wilsonís Wharf from October 27to 30. Tickets R30 (R20 concessions) and October 27 is Buy One Get One Free. Bookings through Liesel at the Catalina Theatre on 031 305 6889.
