UKZN LUNCH-HOURS (article first published : 2005-10-11)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal Music School presents regular free lunch-hour concerts from 12h15 to 13h15 in Howard College Theatre unless otherwise indicated.

October 3: Swedish singer Sara Hedman joined by local Jazz favourite Melvin Peters (piano) will present a dynamic set of contrasting jazz styles, held together by the duo's improvisatory exchanges.

October 5: Manor Gardens Ensemble conducted by Janet Roselt in a selection of fun favourites performed by learners from Manor Gardens Primary School.

October 10: Christopher Duigan (piano), Evelien Ballantine (flute) and Krystian Chernev (cello) perform solo, unaccompanied and trio works for flute, cello & piano including Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano by Czech composer Bohuslav Martin˙ and Scena for Flute by South African composer John Simon.

October 12: UKZN African Music Ensemble - featuring students from the African Music Project.

October 17: Popular Durban band Cynosure - a colourful mix of pop-rock with a hint of jazz featuring Gareth van der Spek & Rowan Stuart (guitar & vocals), Jared Collison (bass) & Michael Goddard (drums).

October 19: Jazz Students - standard jazz repertoire and original student compositions featuring instrumentalists and vocalists from the UKZN Jazz Programme.

October 24: JIKA - Afro-Jazz band led by Bongani Nkwanyana (bass & vocals), with Nelson Gumede (piano), Siphiwe Cebekhulu (keyboards) Mdu Mahlobo (guitar), Siyabonga Duma (saxophone) and Thabiso Mnanyana (drums).

October 26: Classical Instrumentalists from the UKZN School of Music.

October 31: KZNPO Campus Concert: KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra with students from the UKZN School of Music. Conducted by Naum Rousine. (NB: This concert will take place at OSCA (Opera Studio & Choral Academy).
