WOLFGANG DAVID (article first published : 2005-10-6)

Friends of Music will present internationally acclaimed violinist Wolfgang David accompanied on piano by Francois du Toit.

In the space of a few short years, Wolfgang David has ensconced himself on the international stage both as a recitalist and as a guest soloist with many leading orchestras. He has toured widely in Europe, the United States, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Israel, South Africa, India, Egypt and Turkey.

He performs on a violin built in 1731 by Joseph Guarneri del Gesu, Cremona, which is on exclusive loan to him from the Austrian National Bank. The winner of many competitions and prizes, he has earned extensive accolades wherever he has played.

Francois du Toit is acknowledged as one of South Africa's finest pianists, chamber musician and music educator. He distinguished himself in several important international piano competitions overseas, has toured China, Moscow, as well as being a highly respected adjudicator at various national music competitions. He is Associated Professor of Piano at the University of Cape Town.

Before the recital, there will be a Prelude Performer which is part of Friends of Musicís development project to introduce talented young classical musicians into professional music circles.

The concert will take place at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road, on October 11 at 19h45. Booking is at Computicket.
