DBD AT SIBAYA (article first published : 2005-10-6)

The well-known isicathamiya group, Durban Black Drifters (DBD), will perform at Krakatoa at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom on October 14 at 20h00. The show coincides with the launch of their new CD titled Ivangeli. Produced by multi-award winner and internationally renowned singer Jabu Khanyile, the ten track album is a must for all lovers of isicathamiya music.

Led by multi–talented Nkandla born Chris Ntuli, the eight piece Durban Black Drifters has performed in Norway, Belgium, France and China. Early next year they will tour the US and Japan for three months.

Ntuli has worked and recorded two albums with the legendary Joseph Shabalala of Ladysmith Black Mambazo entitled Ukuzala Ukuzelula and Thuthukani Ngoxolo. Other top musicians he has woorked with are Madala Kunene, Busi Mhlongo, Aierto Moreria (Brazil), Khaya Mahlangu and the late Sipho Gumede, to name but a few.

On this important night DBD will be accompanied by internationally acclaimed bassist Philani Ngidi’s Jazz Band featuring veteran saxophonist Jerry Kunene. Other members are Susan Barry (piano), Lihle Ngidi (vocals) and Karriem Darries (drums). Special guest will be the brilliant Mozambican guitarist Zoco Dimande.

DBD is the first Isicathamiya group to perform at this venue in a show that promises to be a glittering night of jazz and cultural music. The evening is presented with compliments from Krakatoa Sibaya Casino Entertainment Kingdom in association with Sunrise Records and DBD Entertainment.
