WE WILL ROCK YOU (article first published : 2005-10-4)

Showtime Management is producing the internationally acclaimed musical We Will Rock You with an exclusively South African cast. The organisation will be looking for male and female actors with excellent singing voices who can move and an ensemble of fully trained, versatile dancers who can sing. Rehearsals will commence late March 2006 and performances will run until October 2006 in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The first round of auditions will commence as follows:

Johannesburg, Civic Theatre at 10h00: October 16 for male and female dancers and October 17 for male and female singers/actors. Cape Town, Artscape Theatre, Room 301 at 10h00: October 20 for male and female dancers and October 21 for male and female singers/actors. Durban, Playhouse Theatre: October 25 at 10h00 for male and female dancers and October 25 at 14h00 for male and female singers/actors. All applicants must be available for the whole day of the audition and should be prepared for waiting.

All applicants for Singers/Actors must be prepared with a rock song with sheet music and a ballad. They will also be required to move, so appropriate clothing and footwear is necessary for the choreography. Dancers will be required to sing as an ensemble so need not prepare a song. All applicants must bring an up-to-date C.V and recent photograph. These will not be returned.

All successful applicants will be required to come to final auditions with the international creative team as follows: Johannesburg, Civic Theatre - November 16 to 18; Cape Town, Artscape Theatre - November 20 to 21 and Johannesburg, Civic Theatre – November 23 to 24 (possibly November 25 if necessary). The characters are detailed hereunder:

GALILEO (male): high rock voice with strong falsetto (D below mid C to Bb above mid C - Full voice, Falsetto to E two above middle C); Age 20-30 years, rock tenor. Star package. Highly energised and charismatic. Great voice. Athletic build. Good mover. USA accent

SCARAMOUCHE (female): strong rock belt voice (E below middle C to E two above middle C) Age 20-30, quirky strong comedienne. High belt rock voice. Good mover.

KHASHOGI (male): high rock baritone with falsetto (D below middle C to A above middle C - full voice, Falsetto to E two above middle C) Aged 25-45, high baritone rock. Good character actor. Smooth elegant. A mover. Sinister and controlled.

THE KILLER QUEEN (female): full soul/rock voice ( E below middle C to E two above middle C) Aged 25-45, powerful singer. Diva actress. Mature. Chest belt. Big range. USA accent.

BRITNEY(male): full rock voice with ‘scream’ (D below middle C to B above middle C) Aged 20-30, Rock belt. Strong superhero warrior dude. Martial arts if possible. Comic actor. Good mover.

MEAT(female): strong rock voice: (A below middle C to E two above middle C). Aged 20-30, high belt - top notch rock voice. Strong sexy rock chick. Lots of attitude. Comic actress. Good mover.

POP (male): Light rock voice (E below middle C to E above middle C). Aged 35-55, good comic actor. No need to be a good singer. Baritone.

For the ensemble, all singer/actors and dancers both male and female need to be between the ages of 18 and 30 and able to move well. All dancers need to be able to sing. The males must be strong athletic, of a fairly uniform height with a funky edge to their work and able to do basic partner work with girls such as lifts. The female dancers must be strong, toned, attractive and funky with a sound technique.

All dancers need to have enough technique to give perform eight shows a week without injury. Also needed are one male swing and one female swing, both of who need to be strong and versatile dancer/singer/actors.
