TOP C (article first published : 2005-09-26)

Nuts 4 Music in Association with The Catalina Theatre are proud to present Top C which offers a great selection of songs and opera arias featuring three of South Africa’s brightest young opera star tenors: Goodman Mkhize, Khulekani Khumalo and Bhekisani Mkhize.

Originally hailing from Pietermaritzburg, these three highly talented youngsters perform a specially arranged programme of trios and solos including Il Mio Tesoro, Oh Paradiso, Deh Mei Bolenti Spiriti, Parlami D’Amore, Mattinata, Because, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Be My Love, Funiculi Funicula, etc. Their accompanist will be well-known German pianist Gerhard Geist.

A BMus graduate, Goodman Mkhize starred in the recent OSCA production of Cosi Fan Tutte and already has a considerable amount of vocal experience behind him, including a student exchange invitation to study at Gothenburg University in Sweden in 2002, the St. John Passion in Zambia, a visit to New York with OSCA, a Youth Concerto appearance in 2002 and now in 2004 with the KZNPO. He is a recipient of both SAMRO and Opera Bursary awards and is currently teaching at a school in Grahamstown.

Bheki Mkhize (they are not related!) has appeared in The Last Night of the Proms, with the KZN Youth Concerto, and in Master Classes by Barbara Hill-Moore and Enia Mazzola. He was awarded the Cecil Renaud and Candidate Trust Scholarships in 2002 and has a partial Atlantic Philanthropies Opera Scholarship to further his studies.

Khulekani Khumalo began singing at a very early age, and was a boy soprano. He is a member of the prestigious award winning Old Mutual/Telkom National Choir Champions – African Chorus, and is a solo member of the Playhouse Senzenje Chorale Project. He is a BMus student at OSCA.

Top C will appear at 12h00 on October 2 at Catalina Theatre, Wilson’s Wharf. Tickets R65 include snacks and a glass of champagne. Bookings through Thandeka on 031 305 6889.
