SANLAM MUSIC AWARDS (article first published : 2005-09-24)

The top up and coming music talent of South Africa competed in Parow recently at the 17th national Sanlam Music Competition for Primary School Learners.

The 63 participating young maestros for the competition were selected at auditions in the main centres in June. They included 14 nine-year olds and one of seven.

The eight finalists chosen from the 18 participants in the third round who will vie for top honours at the gala concert/final round include two young KZN musicians. They are violinists Michelle Hsu (9) and Jacqui Wedderburn-Maxwell (12), both from Durban.

The competition has been presented by the South African Society for Music Teachers (Tygerberg) since 1989. It aims to identify promising music students and to give them the opportunity to compete nationally at an early stage. It is the only competition of its kind for primary school learners in the country, and has already put a number of young South African musicians on the road to national and even international - acclaim.
