SOUND OF THE CITY (article first published : 2005-09-22)

Durban audiences are in for a surprise when seven of the city’s biggest musical stars lay down the soundtrack to Durban at the first Cell C Sound Of The City showcase in association with Edgars on September 24 as the technical production and format for the concert is unlike anything experienced before.

It will be the first time for a South African concert that giant dynamic full colour LED video screens will be used on such a big scale. The entire backdrop to the stage – over 15m wide and 4m high – is video screen, which will operate either as one large backdrop or cut into multiple screens. Visuals – graphics, live performances, city images – will be mixed live by a VJ and tailored for each artists performance.

Each of the seven artiste’s performances: T’zozo en Professor, SHANA, Soul Brothers, Phuzekhemsi, City Bowl Mizers, Deluxe and Tira and Sox - have been carefully planned from a technical perspective. Lightening, mood, visuals and sound have all been designed around the playlist of each of their sets, and are unique for each artist.

The showcase is a massive two-hour performance with no breaks – each artist will pay homage to the Durban sound by playing only their big hits back to back. Durban’s finest Tira and Sox, will be on the turntables, mixing into the end of each artists set, through the changeover and into the next performance.

“After the first concert in Jo’burg, people commented that for the first time serious respect was being shown to musicians by giving them a platform normally reserved for visiting international artists. The Durban showcase is no different and audiences are in for great surprise,” said Gareth Gordon-Davies, Cell C’s Sponsorship Manager.

Tickets for Cell C’s Sound Of The City at the Durban Exhibition Centre on September 24 R70 on sale at Computicket. All proceeds will be channelled through to developmental causes including the various music initiatives the companies support.

The Cell C Sound Of The City Durban will be recorded and broadcast on SABC 1 on October 9 from 18h00 to 18h30 (repeated October 11 from 10h00 to 10h30.)
