KZNPO SPRING SEASON (article first published : 2005-08-22)

The countdown to the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s Spring Season is in full swing - with a month to go to the launch of what promises to be a most memorable WSS season.

The opening concert of the WSS Spring Season on September 15 is the National Youth Concerto Festival which pays tribute to young people who have music at the centre of their lives. Titled Stars of Tomorrow and conducted by Lykele Temmingh, it offers something for everyone, including an exciting new jazz element. The concert sets a high standard of performance for aspiring virtuosos and has become an auspicious event on the WSS calendar.

On September 22, the KZNPO welcomes back the outstanding performers of the Norwegian National Opera for Operatic Celebrations. Norway celebrates 100 years of independence and the concert also forms part of the Celebrate Durban week festivities. Conducted by Kjell Seim it features soloists Ragnhild Heiland Sorensen (soprano), Linda Bukhosini (soprano), Ingeborg Kosmo (mezzo-soprano), Henrik Engelsviken (tenor) and Bongani Tembe (tenor). On the programme is Grieg's Peer Gynt, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor and some popular favourites. The notable Durban Symphonic Choir and SA Singers also bring their wealth of South African talent to the stage for an evening of operatic delight!

François-Xavier Roth, who conducted the world premier of Phelelani Mnomiya’s work, Zizi Lethu, Themba Lethu with the KZNPO in Durban and the subsequent concert at the Barbican in London in 2004 returns to the city for the concert on September 29. Soloist will be Konstantin Soukhovetsky in the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20. The toher work on the programme will be Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.
