YOLISA PHAHLE (article first published : 2005-08-14)

M-Net, Africa's pay television channel has announced the appointment of Yolisa Phahle as Channel O Acting General Manager.

Born to exile parents in London, Yolisa cut her teeth in the industry as a musician. Along with a handful of black classically trained musicians, she formed a band featuring a string section and the lead singer of British reggae band Steel Pulse. She has performed with the likes of Maxi Priest, Jamiroquai, Soul II Soul and Duran Duran.

Her broadcast career began at the BBC World Service where she trained as Studio Manager. She went on to become a World Service Music producer before being appointed Senior Producer at BBC 6 Music, a music station launched in 2002. She returned to South Africa with her family in 2004.

"I'm thrilled and delighted to be working for a channel whose mandate is to make the best music television for Africa", she says about her appointment as Acting GM: Channel O. "The continent has an unprecedented musical heritage. Having seen the success rate of locally produced programmes I'm confident that Channel O can play a major role in uniting African communities through our love of music. We are creating highly interactive programmes in which our viewers will be given a voice."

Says M-Net's CEO, Glen Marques: "We are delighted to have someone with Yolisa's experience and capability on board. We are confident she will play a pivotal role in taking the Channel to a new level both in South Africa and on the Continent where it is a leading brand."
